Who we are

What’s in a name? In our case, quite a lot! Our church’s full name is Emmanuel Canadian Reformed Church – keep on reading to see how our name helps define who we are!
Emmanuel consists of two Hebrew words: אֵל (’El, meaning ‘God’) and עִמָּנוּ (ʻImmānū, meaning ‘with us’). It is a name used in the Bible in the Old Testament, where the coming of our Lord is prophesied:

Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son and shall call his name Immanuel. (ESV, Isaiah 7:14)

Jesus Christ was sent as the fulfillment of this Old Testament prophesy. God continues to be with us as the Holy Spirit lives in our hearts and transforms our lives. As servants of Christ we are called to trust in him and to express our thankfulness to God for undeserved salvation from our sins. We do this by:

  • making known the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
  • living as respectable citizens, showing our love for God and our neighbour.
  • promoting his Kingdom in all areas of life.

We are Canadian, meaning that we have been given the opportunity and the responsibility to preach the Gospel in our great country. We serve in this beautiful land with the mission to act as a welcoming light and preserving salt.
Reformed refers back to the Great Reformation of the sixteenth century when the Church returned to the Bible as the rule for all of life.
God’s Church is the assembly of believers and their children. It is preserved and supported by God the Father through God the Son, Jesus Christ, who gathers and guides the Church by his Spirit and Word. The true Church is known by:

  • the pure preaching of the Gospel.
  • the pure administration of the sacraments of baptism and Lord’s Supper.
  • the faithful application of church discipline.
